ESIRAI CAMP

Walking with Wildebeest

Esirai camp moves with the great migratory herds of Wildebeest that cross the Serengeti in what is known as Nature’s Greatest Show on Earth. This intimate traveling camp enables you to experience being a part of this 600-kilometre journey as the Wildebeest, Zebra and their Antelope companions walk their time-honoured grazing routes from the Southern plains to the North for the Mara River crossing.

With only eight tents, this camp has a light ecological footprint and uses solar power and other eco-friendly practices. Yet it still offers comfort: attentive service, great local food and a privileged place from which to witness one of Nature’s wonders. Days in the camp draw to a close with a sundowner and a hearty dinner made by your private chef. Stories are shared around the campfire before retiring to your tent to a unique lullaby of roaring lions.

We locate the camp in the best-secluded vantage points, determined by seasonal weather changes and the position of the herds. During the rainy season, the herds calve in the Southern grass plains to build strength but slowly move northward in May, following a few routes. Then, they begin the long trek back South at the end of the year.

MESS TENT

The camp’s heart is the mess tent the adjoining library tent and outdoor fire pit. It is well-stocked, and a waiter is on call at any time to serve up a G&T or an ice-cold beer.

Dining is communal in Esirai. Guests gather around the fire at dusk for sundowners and snacks before a white table cloth dinner is served.

The library tent offers a quiet corner for rest. A perfect place to contemplate the views with a book in hand or to enjoy a table game with fellow adventurers. A solar charging station is available in the library tent.

EXPERIENCES & ACTIVITIES

The camp allows for the ultimate freedom and flexibility. The rhythm of each day is different. You can head out early to the plains to soak up the energy of a new dawn, climb to the top of a remote rocky outcrop for a view of the short grass plains, enjoy a luxurious breakfast, or stay in camp and enjoy lazy game viewing from your tent.

Activities include game drives, bush meals and hot air balloon rides. Game drives take place twice daily. Expect to see herds of the great migration and all the big cats – lion, leopard and cheetah. Other wildlife commonly seen are elephant, giraffe, zebra, warthog and hyena.

Walking safaris are available to those aged 12 years and over. Walks bring you close to all things, large and small. For a bird’s eye view of the migration, take it to the skies in a hot air balloon over the herd-filled plains.

TENTS/ROOMS

The eight mobile tents nestle in the shade of large trees and offer views of the wilderness. The tents are furnished with wide comfy beds, bedside tables and reading lights, folding campaign-style luggage racks and cupboards and carpets line the floors. The en-suite bathrooms and dressing area feature a folding campaign-style dressing table with a basin, and a towel rack, with three sizes of thick quality towels. Following the time-honoured tradition of luxury mobile camping, the tents have Safari toilets, the most environmentally friendly solution available. Refreshing safari showers are available at any time of the day. Two fully independent tents welcome families of up to five, inter-connected to enable family members to move between the tents without venturing outside at night.
