Entara is committed to fighting environmental degradation; ensuring that we have a meaningful, positive social impact; and taking responsibility for educating people on the importance of travel sustainably. Here are tips on how you can support eco-conscious travel:
When planning your trip, choose a destination known for its eco-friendly practices and a solid commitment to sustainability. Some destinations may have strict regulations to protect the environment and preserve local culture, so research before you go.
When choosing a place to stay, look for accommodations with eco-friendly practices such as; renewable energy, eco-friendly sewage treatment, biodegradable soaps and detergents, and sustainable construction materials. Find hotels with green initiatives such as no single-use plastics, free drinking water refills, or non-indigenous planting policies.
Support companies that purchase locally. Ask: Do they source goods from local farmers and companies? Do they use local builders, and traditional artisans and provide employment and training locally? Make it your aim to support a sustainable local economy.
When travelling, it’s easy to generate a lot of waste. Bring a reusable water bottle and packing bags to reduce your impact. Avoid single-use plastic as much as possible. Travel light and make use of laundry services at your camp.
When in a new place, respect the local environment and culture. Be mindful of your actions and how they might impact the environment and the local community. For example, don’t litter, stay on designated trails, and avoid damaging natural habitats. In addition, respect local customs and consult your local guide on how to dress appropriately.
Try and participate in light-footprint tourism activities, and look for environmentally and socially responsible ones such as; nature hikes, wildlife-watching tours, and cultural experiences supporting local communities. Conversely, avoid activities with a heavy carbon footprint, those that exploit animals and people, or any activity that contributes to environmental degradation.
Regardless of the efforts to be sustainable, travel might still have an adverse environmental impact. To offset this, consider purchasing carbon offsets. Carbon offsets are investments in projects that sequester carbon emissions from the atmosphere while supporting local communities and strengthening local governance. Check out Carbon Tanzania, which works in the same landscape as ours and which is doing a fantastic job in supporting conservation and communities.

Sustainable travel is all about being mindful of your impact on the environment and local communities. By choosing sustainable operators, accommodations and activities, reducing waste, and supporting and empowering local communities, you can help to minimise tourism’s negative impact. So, next time you plan a trip, factor in responsibility and sustainability.
